DISSERTATION
Pens and Probes:  The Role Writing Plays in the Careers of Successful Dental
Hygienists
Director:  Dr. Stephen Tchudi

My dissertation project, a qualitative case study, explores the role writing plays in the
careers of successful dental hygienists.  Beginning with a review of the literature of
workplace literacy and writing in the medical professions, my study then develops a
description of the realities of writing in the lives of the dental hygienist participants with
general themes of the range of audience, discourse, and process; education and
classroom practice; and awareness of writing’s role in careers of dental hygienists.
Following the presentation of the data, I review more research of writing across the
curriculum literature, writing in the genres, and writing in other disciplines as well as
some specific teaching methodologies.  My study concludes with my final observations
on dental hygiene and writing; that composition and rhetoric scholars are in an ideal
position to empower the writing, therefore success, of future dental hygienists and that
dental hygiene educators have many opportunities to incorporate writing into dental
hygiene curricula.  In the recommendations, I present a new model course and an
argument that composition and rhetoric offers a way to revise dental hygiene curricula
since composition and rhetoric specialists have an attitude toward learning as
composing that can help create more independent and successful dental hygienists.
