A little about me: I have been teaching writing at the university/colIege level since 1996, hold a Ph.D. in Composition and Rhetoric (the process of writing and modes of communication) from the University of Nevada Reno, and am a published writer for mainstream and professional media (click here for a summary of workplace and writing). I am also a Registered Dental Hygienist with 21 years of private practice experience and 4 years of teaching dental hygiene. If you want to learn more about my academic preparation, publications, teaching interests and experience, research, and more, please click here for my cv. If you want to learn more personal, quirky things about me, click here. My Teaching Style: I avoid lecturing. I believe knowledge is created (actively on your part) rather than absorbed (passively where you sit and wait for the teacher to bestow on you her expertise). Therefore, acting more as a facilitator than a lecturer, I run most of my classes workshop style. It does require attendance to get anything out my classes (including a decent grade) and I expect you to show up to class and to take responsibility for your own learning through active participation. I'm big on writing as a process, so in my classes we do lots of revising. I also prefer to conduct my classes using portfolios (submit files of your work to be evaluated as a whole) or contract grading (where you decide what grade you want and do the specific requirements needed to achieve that grade). If you want to know more about my teaching philosophy, click here. My areas of expertise: Composition: all levels including developmental, first-year, and advanced courses; language and gender; literary non-fiction; literature and medicine; women in literature; language and science; medical rhetoric/writing; professional editing and publishing; technical communication; rhetoric; women in rhetoric. Dental hygiene: Perio, Oral Pathology, Patient Education, Ethics, Clinic, Advanced Instrumentation |
